If your facility has always used pressurized cylinders for calibration gas, it's worth actually running the numbers on the alternative.
The cylinder model
A standard 58-liter calibration gas cylinder provides roughly one hour of usable gas, at a cost that typically works out to around $300 per hour of use once you account for the cylinder cost, shipping (as a hazardous material), and disposal. Multiply that across a facility calibrating multiple detectors on a regular schedule, and the annual spend adds up quickly — before counting the labor of managing cylinder inventory, tracking expiration, and arranging disposal.
The on-demand model
An ACD source generates calibration gas on demand rather than storing it under pressure. A single source can provide up to 100 hours of usable gas, at a cost that works out to roughly $13.91 per hour — around 20 times cheaper per hour than cylinder gas. Sources ship as non-hazardous freight, store with an effectively unlimited shelf life, and don't require disposal as a pressurized hazardous good.
What this means in practice
For a facility running frequent calibrations, the difference isn't marginal — it's often the difference between calibration gas being a manageable line item and being a recurring budget headache. It also removes a real safety and logistics burden: no pressurized cylinders sitting in storage rooms or riding along in service vehicles.
